How to Quickly Insert En Dashes (APA Style) within a Reference

Hi~ I would appreciate some help and advice on the best and quickest method for inserting "en dashes" within APA-style references while working within the EndNote program? [Note: An "en dash" is slightly longer than a hyphen and is used to indicate a range of pages (i.e., 54-56) for journal articles or book sections.] I've tried: 1) copying and pasting the en dash from an MS word doc into the EndNote reference; and 2) copying the en dash symbol from the Windows' System Tools Character Map. The manual mentioned using Term Lists but I couldn't figure out how it works for special characters like the en dash. The first two methods work but is there a way where I can insert the en dash while staying within the EndNote program so entering page numbers would be quicker and easier? Thanks for the help. Thanks for the tip, Peter. Unfortunately I'm using a notebook computer so there isn't any keypad and I don't have a peripheral keypad to plug into my notebook. :( But I did manage to figure out how to create a Term List in EndNote to contiain the en dash and other diacritical marks I need - so I can now access this list while in EndNote and incorporate the markings as needed while entering my references. I should be greatly surprised if your notebook didn't have this function and didn't allow you to enter Alt-0150. If using an Fn key combo is too complicated, then there are other options. You could use an input utility, such as Quick Unicode Input <http://www.cardbox.com/quick.htm> or UnicodeInput <http://www.fileformat.info/tool/unicodeinput/index.htm> (In Unicode, en-dash is U+2013.) Regards, Peter Sim Thanks once again for your help, Peter, and especially information about the "FN" key - which turned out to be the "missing key" in my case. The FN key in conjunction with the ALT 0150 keys worked like a charm to create the en dash. And it seemed to be quicker than creating a Term List of symbols. If you're interested in working with terms lists it turned out to be easy to do. Here's a quick overview: Go to TOOLS, DEFINE TERM LISTS The "Term Lists" window pops up. Click CREATE LIST and the "Term List Name" box prompts you to enter a name for your list (e.g., "Hawaiian Words"). The "Term Lists" window now shows your new list (Hawaiian Words). To add a term into the Special Characters list, click on the "Terms" tab, then click on the NEW TERM button. The "New Term" window pops up then you type in the word(s) and click SAVE TERM. To use the Term List: Go to TOOLS, OPEN TERMS LIST which will show a list of the available lists and select the list you want (Hawaiian Words). The "Term Lists" window pops up with the "Terms" tab displaying the available term. Click to select the term you want then click INSERT TERM. The manual has more detailed information. This is a Windows issue, rather than an EndNote issue. Most, perhaps all, notebook computers emulate the numeric keypad with some key combination, usually involving the Fn key -- see: . I should be greatly surprised if your notebook didn't have this function and didn't allow you to enter Alt-0150. Hi, There is a useful freeware program called MoreKeys which allows you to add both En and Em dashes to its native list of symbols. According to their website, Brazer no longer support the program but there seem to be multiple sites from which you can download it. Nobody seems to have mentioned that, at least on a Mac, an en-dash can be entered easily with OPTION + HYPHEN. For me it works both in Word and Endnote. (Relatedly, the longer em-dash is SHIFT-OPTION-HYPHEN, which on a Mac works both in Word and Endnote too.) I use Word for Mac X and Endnote for Mac 7.
