Hello Everyone,
Question 1 - We are trying to export / import a Reference Manager file
over to Endnotes, and in doing this, the second number on the article
end page gets lost. Reference Manager has separate start and end page
entry fields, while in endnote it simply says "pages." Thus the page
information doesn't import correctly. Is there a process that will give
a different template that might show the end page of the article?
Question 2 - Can EndNote libraries be ported to Microsoft Access or
Excel? I have followed the EndNote export instructions and used the tab
delimited style, and it appears that the text file exports correctly.
When I import the .txt file into MS Access or Excel, the information is
all inserted in two fields instead of separate fields.
Question 3 - Does anyone have any suggestions for downloading a
reference from Wilson Web and importing the reference information into
EndNote X? I have added Wilson Web to my trusted sites, temporarily
allowed pop-up's from the site and selected the EndNote filter for
download. The download creates an HWWilson.ris file, but nothing seems
to facilitate a successful EndNote import.
Thank you for your assistance.

Hello Mike and the rest of the EndNote listserv crew
I can shed some light on Question 2. We've successfully done this since
we use Access as a stopping point on our way to our own metadata
catalogue. We are still using EndNote 5. Behind the times I know but it
works for what we need it for.
Yes, EndNote can be exported to Access but it is a bit of an interesting
and somewhat convoluted process.
1. Create an output style and under the bibliographic template use ^ as
your delimiter for each field. We chose ^ as it is a character that
doesn't show up in any of our records. We then used a combination of ^$#
to mark the end of the record.
The Bibliographic template in our output style for journal articles
looks like this
Author |^| Year |^| Title |^ |Journal |^ |Volume |^ |Issue |^ |Pages |^
|ISBN/ISSN |^ |URL |^ |Keywords |^ |Abstract |^$#
The | lines signify 'Forced separations'.
2. You have to create this type of template for each of the reference
types in your database. Books, Edited books, conference proceedings,
etc.
After you've done that you're almost ready to export your data to a text
file.
3. Choose your newly created output style.
4. Now, you've got to create a separate text file for each of the
different reference types in your database. (i.e., one for journal
articles, one for books, etc.) This is because each reference type uses
different fields. They have some in common like author, date, and title,
but they also can have different fields like journal title, or
conference proceedings title, etc.
The easiest way to do this is to display the reference type field as one
of your 5, sort by that field and then use the highlight, show selected
and export functions to create a text file for each reference type.
5. After you've created your text files you can now import them into
Access.
Now this is where the process gets a bit fuzzy for me as another one of
my team members does this part of it.
He indicated that when you import into Access make sure to indicate that
the ^ is the delimiter.
He also suggested that one other thing you might want to try is first
creating the actual table in Access, indicating ahead of time what the
fields should be, then import the data into that specific table, rather
than allowing the import routine to create the table for you. Sometimes
the import routine cannot be trusted, so we always create the tables
ahead of time, then import the information into our custom table.
As I said this is a bit of a convoluted process but it works. If you've
got any questions or comments please feel free to contact me off list.
Cheers

Open My Computer or Windows Explorer, find the .ris file, and just
double click on it.
If that doesn't work, open Windows Explorer, click on Tools on the Menu
bar, then click on Folder Options. Now click on the File Types tab.
Browse down the list to find RIS. Highlight that item. The dialog box
should indicate that RIS files open with Web Export Helper.

Are you sure you're using the correct import filter? It seems to work
for me. It's the RefMan RIS Export filter which doesn't work right (it
puts both start and end pages in SP).

Ported? No. But their contents can be imported.

Have you looked at it with a text editor? The export filter seems to
work for me.

What have you tried?

John,
I notified EndNote last week that this import from WilsonWeb was not
working. I had a custom filter which worked fine for me and I sent that
along to them.
I am assuming they are working on fixing the problem.
