ABI ProQuest Filter

Mingfang,
The only easy way to import records from ABI ProQuest into EndNote is to
save them in the "Export" format and choose the format that is compatible
with EndNote and ProCite. Unfortunately, this format does not provide the
abstract and only provides the start page of the article and not the end
page. But it was very easy to create a filter for this format, and it is
attached. (The file is called "UAABI(ProQuest).enf to reflect the name of
my institution, but feel free to rename it anything that would be useful.)
The format you provided (which is the format you get by choosing "Email
Articles" does not have tags on certain of the fields, e.g. the title,
journal name and date fields, and this makes if difficult (impossible?) to
create a filter that will import the records cleanly unless you manually add
tags to the field where they are missing. In addition, when you email the
articles, each article is sent in a separate email which will require you to
save each email as a separate text-file and then import each record
separately. As you can imagine, this would end up being a very time
consuming exercise! If someone else has been able to create a filter that
deals with the emailed format in an efficient manner, I'd be very happy to
hear about it.
So.... The bottomline is that the most efficient way to deal with ABI
ProQuest records is to save them in the Export/EndNote-ProCite format and
then cut and paste abstracts and end-pages from the database if they are
required.

Linda,
Thanks for the kind pointers.
Clearly I have no other options other than emailing those records back to
me.

Thanks for sharing the filter. Apparently the filter was not attached to
the message you sent to the mailing list. It would be nice if you can
email to me directly.

You are right. I may have to add a few tags of my own for those fields -
title, journal, and date.

With the email program I use on my system - Eudora - the messages are
stored in one text file (plus another index file). I can actually select
the records I need, create a new mailbox, and move all those records
there. Later I can use a text editor to view all the records, and feed the
whole file to Endnote if I want to. And I believe each record will begin
with some predefined fields such as from: ...,
BTW, the Proquest ABI records do come with abstracts (I deleted most of it
from the email I sent to the list.).

Seems I will have to settle for the second best. I have been experimenting
with the filter myself, and have had some pretty good progress too. Would
love to see yours so I can learn more.
Kindest regards.
