RE: inserting reference into an excel spreadsheet

The 'copy and paste' options are easiest for a few refs, but if you have a large number and don't want to keep moving between EndNote and Excel, you could copy your ref list onto an unused worksheet in Excel. You could then use a function like VLOOKUP to insert the formatted reference where you want it. One approach (which is quicker to do than to describe) is to:

1. Choose your output style, and edit it so that all references are preceded by the EndNote record number and a tab character. [Use Edit|Output Styles|Edit "your style". Under the 'Bibliography' heading, click 'Layout'. In the top box ('Start each reference with'), use the insert field button to insert 'Record Number', and again to insert 'tab'. Save the style.

2. Select all the references you want to use in Excel, copy them (use Ctrl-k to get the formatted ref), and paste into an unused worksheet in your Excel spreadsheet. You should get record numbers in the first column, and the formatted refs in the second. [If you lose formatting, such as bold, italics, you may have to paste into Word first then use 'Table|Convert|Text to table' to get a formatted table to paste into Excel].

3. Now you can use VLOOKUP to return the formatted reference in your main worksheet. For example, if you type an EndNote record number in cell B2, the function =VLOOKUP(B2,Sheet2!A1:B1000,2,FALSE) will search the table of EndNote refs in the range A1:B1000 on Sheet2, find the corresponding record number in the first column, and return the formatted reference in the same row, in the second column.

I use EndNote 7, so the menus may vary a little depending on your version. Also, if your output style uses tabs, then you may not get separate columns for record numbers and refs - you might need to play around with other special characters, and Words 'convert text to table' function, to get the right layout.

I am assembling a database (in excel) using data from the primary
literature, and am keeping track of where each bit of data comes from.
After entering a few of these references by hand, it occurred to me that
this is something that Endnote might be able to do. None of the
drop-down menus in Excel refer to Endnote, and a quick internet search
failed to turn up anything. Specifically, I would like to enter a
reference from an endnote library into one cell in an excel spreadsheet
(so that it looks like a reference you would see in a "works cited").
Does anyone know if this is possible?

Thanks!
Liz Harp
