I'm using EndNote 6.0.1 Build 400 on a Mac iBook running Jaguar.
Recently I've encountered a problem using Endnote with my MS Word X
documents formatted with EndNote refs. When I use the Word Tools menu and
try to invoke any EN command, I get the message
This commandis not available because a document window is not active"
What is the problem. I checked and the two EN plugin files are in the Office
Startup folder, and EN starts when I open Word.
Thanks

Dear all
One of our students is having problems when printing out a bibliography in
EndNote 4. She has large image files in folios, all in the one library, and
has printed a bibliography from these folios succesfully, bar one. This
folio is printing only the last letter of the citation, but then
occasionally will print the entire line.
Can anyone help?

Hi all,
I have a problem with my citation in word. If I mark 2 authors in
EndNote 5.0, vor example Smith, A. 2001 and Smith. A. 2002, in Word I
see the following text: Smith, A. (2001, (2002). It should obviously be
Smith, A. (2001, 2002).

I had some problems with Word XP : it crashed when opening. I have resolved
my problems.
1) I remembered that I had installed a new software after installing Office
XP. So I supposed a DLL conflict. I have uninstalled completely Office XP
(from the Configuration Panel) and then installed it once again.
2) I have downloaded the SP1 then the SP2 then the patches from the site

And now I am working
Good luck

Filip;
I think you may have a glitch in your output style. You may have to modify
the citation, section of which ever output style you are using. This can be
a little complicated so check the manual. Output styles are found under
"edit" "output styles" in version 6. Check how endnote is producing your
citations there may be an extra bracket in there you can just remove.
Cheers;

Someone may be able to help me with this. I'm trying to export data from
EBSCO ATLAS to my EndNote software. I'm connecting to EBSCO via z39.50. The
results I'm getting are labeling all journal articles as Books and the
journal title, volume, and page information is missing. Has anyone
encountered this and come up with a solution?

I just took a look at the Chicago A & B styles on my templates, which
haven't been altered (although I am tweaking a copy of Chicago B into a
house style). The spaces around the Translator and Ed field should be a
special character called "Link Adjacent Text." It is a non-breaking
space, represented on your screen by a little gray diamond, instead of
the little dot that indicates a regular space. It acts like "glue" to
make the text and punctuation that appears before and after a field
"stick" to the field.
If you use "cut-and-paste" in editing the templates, the special
characters turn back into plain spaces. To put them back in, position
your cursor in the correct place, click the "Insert Field" button in the
upper right corner and select "Link Adjacent Text".
The manual, help menu and tutorial all have information on editing
templates which may give more help.

There is a problem with in-text citations in v9 when citing different works by the same author. When the style used works like (Author, Year) instead of (Author Year) the different works are separated by ", , " instead of ", ". Has anyone find a way to avoid this problem?
Thanks,

| A Problem with EN8 and Mac OS 10.4 |

Have just upgraded from using an iBook with 10.3.9 to a PowerBook with vanilla 10.4.0. On completion of manual transfer of files and applications have discovered that EN8 does not work! EN8 launches OK and you can open an existing database but you cannot: add a new reference; open an existing reference; or cite whilst you write in Word X. Have had to revert back to EN 7 which seems to work fine. Any ideas on what could be wrong or what I can do to get EN 8 to work as had been planning to move to Word 2004?

| Reference Type problem et al. |
|
Author:

Hi
We have just upgraded from EndNote 6 to 8. I created a new Reference Type called Journal (I overwrote the Artwork default) with fields including Editor, Year, Journal, Secondary Title, City, Publisher, Volume, etc.
While in the preview pane the record shows Reference Type: Journal (I edited the "Show All" output style), if I open the record it reverts to the Reference Type Journal Article and when I open the drop down menu of reference types to choose Journal, it just doesn't stick.
Seems a bit buggy to me ... but I could have overlooked something.
My second problem is that in the preview pane the keywords are listed one word per line. I want them to appear horizontally, separated by the semicolon delimiter -- this is the way they were set up in our previous version of EndNote. Also, the keywords all seem to want to start with an upper case letter, which I don't want unless the word is a proper noun. Is there somewhere to switch off the upper case for first letter option?

If the year is the same in both cases, you can avoid this by editing the
output style. Under "Citations>Ambiguous Citations", change the "Letter
format" setting from "2000a, 2000b" to "2000a, b".
This will produce citations such as (Smith, 2000a, 2000b). It makes no sense
why this should work, but it does.
But if the years are different, I don't know of any workaround. I reported
this problem to the Technical Support people a while ago. They said they were
unawarare of it, but it's hard to believe that it was not reported during beta
testing.

| Keyword delimiter problem (unsolvable?) |
|
Author:
Posted: Thu, 11 Aug 2005 12:00:54 -0400
|
* Re the keyword delimiter problem
Generally one wants to have the keywords, or individual keyword
strings, in the Keywords field in a reference separated by a
"delimiter", e.g. a comma, in the form
keyword-one, keyword-string-two, keyword-three
where "keyword-string" is may be a string containing several words,
symbols, and even punctuation.
Some EndNote users may wish to use a different delimiter, e.g., a
semicolon, especially if some of their keyword strings actually
contain commas.
In EndNote 8 for the Mac if you select the menu command Tools >>
Define Term Lists >> Keywords Term List, there will be a set of boxes
at the bottom of the window that opens which you can check to
identify which punctuation marks you want to be delimiters for
purposes of your personal Keywords term list. There is, however, an
apparently unavoidable conflict in doing this.
The problem arises if you want to create a bibliographic style -- for
example, a style called "Preview Style With Keywords" -- in which the
list of keywords for each reference is inserted into the
bibliographic citation for that reference. You could then use this
style when viewing the preview pane of the Library window, or when
you print out a preliminary set of references, so that you can review
just what keywords you have assigned to each reference.
The problem is that if you have the comma, or any other delimiters,
checked as your default keyword delimiter(s) as described above,
when EndNote inserts the set of keywords for each reference into the
bibliographic citation, for some reason known only to God and the
EndNote programmers it replaces all of your delimiters with carriage
returns (which are, as the manual notes, the default delimiters for
keywords).
In other words, all of your delimiters are gone, and each keyword
appears on a new line in the on-screen preview window, or in the
printed output. If you have a long list of keywords in an
individual reference, this of course pushes most of them (and
anything that comes after them) off the bottom of the screen.
One can avoid this by leaving the commas, or other delimiters, in the
Keywords field of each reference, but unchecking _all_ of the
optional delimiters at the bottom of the Define Term Lists window.
The keywords will now appear in the bibliographic citation display as
one long string exactly as entered by you, including whatever
delimiters or other punctuation marks are present.
But -- the problem now is that EndNote no longer recognizes or thinks
that you're using any delimiters in your keywords. As a result, when
you import references from a database or update the keywords term
list of your library from your existing references, what you think of
as individual keywords no longer go into your keywords term list as
separate terms. Rather the _entire_ undelimited keyword string in
each reference goes into your term list as a _single_ lengthy term --
which is not helpful later on.
There appears to be no way around this dilemma in EndNote 8. Whether
it's been resolved in EndNote 9 I don't know.

I'd be glad to receive corrections or additions, preferably by direct

Hi
I've been using Endnote for years, using the old system (cut/paste a citation, and then format the bibliography later). I've now started to use cite-while-you write, and am attempting to update a document where I previously used the old system. In this document, if I insert references, I get the old square brackets, and any edits to citations aren't kept when I format the bibliography. Cite while you write works fine in new documents, so I suspect my old citation insertion style may be causing the problem. Has anyone got any suggestions to overcome my problem?
Many thanks
