Hi everyone,
When I open Word 2003 (in Windows XP SP2 with EN 8.0.2), Word hangs for
up to 20 seconds while displaying the message "Running virus scan ..."
(I also have Symantic AntiVirus 2002 Corporate Edition installed.) I
looked in the archives and found similar complaints made a year ago,
with Word 2003 and EN7. Users traced the problem to the EN 7 add-in to
Word, not the antivirus program, but no usable solution was mentioned
(at least not that I could find).
I'm wondering if other EN 8 users have the same problem, and what can be
done about it? Anyone have any ideas?

>From everything I have read, -and I search for this issue on a regular
basis- this is an internal problem with MSWord, some MSWord onboard
virus scanner and any .wll - however MS is silent on the issue. For
those here at our institute, who this really bothers, our IT recommends
they use Word as their MSOutlook editor, and then the effect seems to be
invisible. When you open MSword, it is technically already open, and
doesn't seem to pause. Since I hate using Word as my editor, I live
with the slow opening, and tend to leave Word open for the day. Other
alternative, seem to be making a batch file which runs winword.exe /a,
loading word without the startup items when you know you won't need
them.

Which version of SAVCE are you running? From the year 2002 you
mentioned in your message I'm assuming it should be 7.5 or 8.x. You
may opt for excluding EndNote macro and extension from SAV monitoring
(go to Configure - File System Auto-Protect, put a checkmark in
"Exclude selected...", click on "Exclusions" - "Files/Folders",
navigate to the appropriate files and shortcuts both in the EndNote
directory _and_ in the Office/Word 2003 startup folders). For version
7, the corresponding files' names are EN7CWYW.dot and
EN7Cwyw.WordXP.wll, I am not sure what are the file names in later versions.
If it will solve the problem, consider upgrading the Symantec product
- most recent version is 10 (SAV being a part of Symantec Client
Security product line). I believe that most of Corporate Edition
users now are on version 9.x.
I recall also user having similar problems related to the Options -
Security - Macro Security preferences in Word 2003. Check that
Security Level is set to "Medium", and in the "Trusted Sources" tab,
"Trust all installed add-ins and templates" has a checkmark in it.
If you want, contact me off-list, if you need any additional
information. I'm not sure that the problem is limited to EndNote, but
rather MS Office-related, so it might be considered off-topic for this list.
