I just took a look at the Chicago A & B styles on my templates, which
haven't been altered (although I am tweaking a copy of Chicago B into a
house style). The spaces around the Translator and Ed field should be a
special character called "Link Adjacent Text." It is a non-breaking
space, represented on your screen by a little gray diamond, instead of
the little dot that indicates a regular space. It acts like "glue" to
make the text and punctuation that appears before and after a field
"stick" to the field.
If you use "cut-and-paste" in editing the templates, the special
characters turn back into plain spaces. To put them back in, position
your cursor in the correct place, click the "Insert Field" button in the
upper right corner and select "Link Adjacent Text".
The manual, help menu and tutorial all have information on editing
templates which may give more help.
