Hi Bernhard
I am using EndNote 5 and create BibTeX-files by exporting from EndNote
with the help of the given output style BibTeX-Export. This output
style maps the "label" field from EndNote onto the BibTeX field "key".
You are stating that not the label field but the reference number is
mapped. I wish I could do this too, but in the edit mode one can not
choose the reference number to be exported, because the reference
number is simply not in the list. So how did you achieve this?
thanks
Damian

Well, it IS in the prefix and suffix lists...

I am also using Endnote for my LaTeX document and I am happy to
use the label field.
I may be wrong, but I would not recommend using the reference
number field, since in some circumstances the reference number
may change. For example when working on two PC, one at home,
one at work, I am not sure wether the reference number will be
the same on both systems.

They would if you transferred the same library to both machines, but it is
dangerous (and I do it all the time!)

Most certainly. If you use the same library, and only update it on one
system at a time, carefully synching it, so that it functionally remains
one library, the ref numbers will stay. However, if you need to recreate
from scratch or backup after a catastrophic failure, ref numbers are not
guaranteed to be unchanged. That being said, I should add that my
physical filing system (reprints mostly) is based on the ref number, and
has been for the last 10 years or so, still using the same, ever
expanding library (I started using EndNote way back when the version
number was still 1.something.
