new citation styles
Author: Peter A Nelson    Posted: Wed, 31 Jul 2002 09:14:35 -0400
I want to create a new citation style by copying and modifying an existing
one. (I don't want to lose the original!) Under Edit>Output Styles> I can
create a new style from scratch, or I can edit an existing style, but
nowhere do I find an option or the means to copy an existing style to then
modify. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Pete

Dear Peter,

just open the style with Edit, and save it Save it as...new name, then edit
the newly named style.

I don't have EN6 for the Mac yet, but you should be able to open a style
and then select something like File | Save As to make a copy.

Open the style you want to derive from, then choose Save As... from
the File menu. Make sure you save the new style in the Styles directory.
One of the nice features of EndNote's * Manager user interface is the
ability to indicate if a connection, filter, or style has been derived
from another, and add usage notes.

As one who supports a body of EndNote users, and sometimes has to pick
up after them, this is a good general approach to use for creating new
connections, filters, and styles. If Save As... before making any changes,
there is no risk of inadvertently modifying and corrupting an existing
file. One user had modified a connection file, and it no longer worked.
After 15 minutes of mutual headscratching -- because there was no
obvious explanation -- I noticed that she had introduced a trailing
space to the hostname of the server.
