RE: endnote-interest-digest V1 #1155
Author: MedLawConsult    Posted: Fri, 2 Aug 2002 00:49:14 +0200
Hi,

I had huge problems with Endnote 5 and Word XP as well. Updated both
applications from both websites as much as I could, the problem
remained.

Word but also other MS applications started to behave differently. When
closing a document (also when I had not used Endnote in it)
Word/Oulook/Excell did not offer the three possibilities 'save changes,
not save changes or annul' but just closed. In most cases it did save
the changes, also with little notelike docs which I did not want to =
keep
at all (so made a special waste directory for that) but regretfully it
was far from consistent in that approach and in a few cases it did not
save the changes, of course in papers where I had put so much effort =
in.

Secondly, Worddocs became instable when using Endnote with it. As the
doc become longer and so (?, at least in my case) the number of
references increased, it took longer and longer to accept them, I saw
the hourglass appear and sometimes it took over 5 minutes before I =
could
continue working. And then (the doc about 40 pages and 150 references),
Word stopped responding. I must have sent about a million 'reports' to
MS.

Anyhow, I saved my library, un-installed Endnote and installed on my
laptop which has an earlier version of Word and Windows. There it works
fine. Apart from other versions of windows and word this laptop has
about the same configuration and critical programs as the pc, the =
latter
has a much larger ram memory, but I always thought that should help.

I hoped this kind of problem would disappear with Endnote version 6 but
apparently it does not (with most users). =20

=20

Apart from this comment, which is something for ISIS and MS to find
out/fight about, I have - as a newby to Endnote - 2 questions which can
be answered by you but please without all the technicalities which I
sometimes read here but do not even want to try to understand. A =
program
like this should save time.

The question are;

- Some authors write more than one relevant publication in a
year. Should be forbidden, but anyhow they do. If you cite them in
footnotes that is not a problem, but if you cite in the text, it is. =
The
solution is (Clever,2002a), (Clever 2002b) but how do I get that?

- I usually need to refer to the exact page of a certain
reference. But Endnote throws out all the references which I add
manually. I add eg. a book to the library, but refer to that book in =
the
paper more than once and then to different pages. At the moment after I
had to go to several books for a second time after I had seen that
Endnote had swollen up everything which I had added manually between =
the
()- the highlighted part in the doc when working on it - I make the =
page
referrals outside it. But that is very ugly and only works when I will
get a proofprint whereI can change it into the referral part (and they
are not happy with it). So what is the idea here?

=20

Thanks in advance for the responses. Finally, I would like to make a
compliment to the Dutch representative of ISIS 'researchsoftware nl'.
They have been very responsive but as you have read could not solve the
Endnote-XP problem either.

Endnote does that automagically - can be defined in the style edit
dialog, under the header of 'ambiguous citations'.

Not sure what you're trying to say here, but you can add comments,
such as 'see page X, within a temporary citation, by using a
backslash:

{see e.g. \Jansen, 1990, #300} becomes (see e.g. Jansen, 1990) after
scanning and formatting the paper. For addtnl comment following the
citation (such as specific page numbers or ranges), just include them
following the reference number: {Jansen, 1990, #300 p.5488}.

I use RevMan 4.1 from the Cochrane Collab to conduct systematic reviews and
would like to know if anyone has a method for using Endnote to manage the
references as RevMan does not have capacity to do this very well at all.

Thank you,

As Reagan used to say (a lot), "Here we go again."

Another occurrence of ISI misrepresentation. "When they came for the
individual, unaffiliated new purchaser, I was not one and so I said
it's none of my affair...Then they came for the loyal EndNote users."

For me, it was not being warned that EndNote use requires a
subscription to its databases, not affordable to the solitary user.
(There was a flurry of response when I brought it up, some on the
list defending ISI's silence about this.) Apparently they play
fast-and-loose as a general business practice. Who knows what other
seemingly disconnected experiences among users reflect such a
pervasive corporate policy.

What subscription is required to use EndNote? I use EndNote with PubMed all
the time with no problems.

I talked with Endnote Help yesterday about this problem and was told
that if you go to Get Info on EndNote 6 and click the box that says
Open as Classic Application it will work with Word X on OS X 1.2
He was leery of guaranteeing it, but said so far it seemed to work. I
used it only a little so have no way to say whether it will break.

You're right. There are many situations when check boxes would be
useful. I think the broader issue is that ISI (I don't think they are
called Niles any more) should have completely re-worked the interface
rather than adding features. I'd rather have elegant software that does
the job right than bloatware. Unfortunately they feel they have to add
something to justify the price of the upgrade.

Dear EN Users;

Again, many thanks to Gordon for having the definitive reference on
moving styles. I taped it into my manual some time ago, as I always
forget. However, I agree with Peter that the "old way" was so much
simpler. I use both Word Perfect and Word, and it is so painless to
move customizations in Word relative to WP by simply copying the
normal.dot file to another computer. WP is a bit of a tedious crap
shoot, as it also stores info in the registry, some user files, and
individual macros. So, you have to wade through the different places,
copy files, then select the right configuration options in the
preferences menu. EndNote made a step backwards, I think, when it opted
to stop using the simple file method and put the information in the
registry. Do any of you other Network users have an security/access
problem when trying to do anything with the registry?

I sent a suggestion to ISI about going back to the single file method. I
would like to encourage you other EN users who prefer the single file
method to also join in and make the suggestion.

Mike

I could do with an answer to this problem as I am shortly leading two

Thank you for the information. Nothing in the manual or web pages
indicate this. I have checked with technical support, and they have
confirmed your information.

I had no idea that EndNote had abandoned all of the loyal users like
myself who have used EndNote since version 1, but do not use Word.
Unfortunately, this means that EndNote 6 is useless to me. My original
question is moot.

This task is described in the manual under "bibliographies, moving" (p. 220
for
Endnote 5). If you use cite while you write simply move the bibliography
with
the mouse to the wanted position. Cut and paste would lead to a new
bibliography
at the end of the document when reformatting it. If you do not use cwyw, cut
and
past works also.

Best thing for indents in word is usage of format templates. There you can
specify idents in cm or pt or... and, if you want, also give a hot key
combination for assigning the template to a paragraph.

Hope that helps.

The best way to bring EndNote data to the Palm is:

Create a Word document of the entire list you want, in whatever sequence you
want.

Convert the Word document to a PDF.

Get Acrobat for Palm (free on the Adobe web site).

Put the PDF on your Palm.

That way no memo size limit at all. Make many versions for many formats or
sort sequences.

Subject: Re: endnote-interest-digest V1 #1204

Is there a way to force Endnote 6 to insert the bibliography at some
specified place in a document (e.g. after acknowledgements and before
the list of figures)? I know I can cut and paste, but it'd be =
convenient
to be able to specify the location.

Also, one journal has a particularly weird format for its references
cited section. I'm trying to figure out how to force my manuscript to
conform, but it's not obvious (to me!). I'll try to describe the
formatting by example-obviously I can't reproduce the appropriate
formatting in this email, but hopefully this will make sense:=20
author1
(next line, indent 0.25") year-title-etc.
(next line, indent 0.50") title-journal info-etc that didn't fit on the
2nd line
author2
(next line, indent 0.25") year-title-etc.
author3
(next line, indent 0.25") year-title-etc.
author4
(next line, indent 0.25") year-title-etc.
(next line, indent 0.50") title-journal info-etc that didn't fit on the
2nd line

Having Endnote move to a second line after the author name and having
that second line indent 0.25" can be done easily, but the third, deeper
indent for the "over-flow" line has me stumped.

Thanks, Peter

That is what I thought.

I also thought that I saw someone commenting that it was possible to place
the bibliography other places than at the end of a document; this is what
prompted my question. However, I can't find that comment again, so I must
have misread.

Can anyone tell me how I can export endnote references into MS Access. I

This really covers the question of Finne Hċkon and the first question of
Peter Nelson.

Once the reference list is created by endnote, you can cut it and paste it
anywhere and upon subsequent reformatting, it will remain in the new place.
The easiest way to do this is to move it after you have just started the
paper, so that list is short.

If you do use the manuscript templates that Endnote6 provides, the "place"
for the references are correctly situated. But that is the only reason I
can think of, to use that facility. Presumably there must be a way
therefore, to specify this in the first place, using a field (perhaps by
cutting it out of a template produced document?) but I find it easier to
just place it manually.

For the second question from Peter, I suggest you go straight to Tech
support "endnote" because, I don't even know where to
start and they can be very helpful with a good turnaround time (and can let
you know if it is or isn't possible)!

A few years ago I licensed a Palm OS program called PocketCites that worked
together with another program called JFile to download EndNote bibliogr data
to a handheld device. I haven't used it since EndNote version 4. The
Pocketcites that is available for download was last updated in 2000, so I
suspect it won't work with EndNote 5 or 6. Does anyone of you know of a Palm
OS program that can take transfer of data files from EndNote 6 and display
them on a handheld? Thanks.

One of the new features in EndNote6 is the ability to export EndNote
references to a text file and then import them into the Memo Pad utility of
a Palm OS device.

You will find full details of how to do this in Chapter 12 of the Windows
edition of the EndNote6 manual, and Chapter 11 of the Macintosh edition. The
manual is installed on your hard drive when you install the software.

Dear Robert,

you seem to have a lot of interest in the document, so I would like to
offer to provide some web space on our laboratory pages where the
document can live so that others can benefit form your expertise and not
have to keep bugging you for the document. You would, of course, be
credited as being the author.

If you think this would be helpful then please let me know,

cheers,

Hello All,
Over the last few days, there have been some questions
regarding
exporting EndNote records to MS Access and back again. I have written
detailed instructions on how to go about this (in both directions) and
placed them in a pdf file. If anyone is still interested, you can

hello£Ħ
I got a problem with citation import from ISI Web of Knowledge. It
has a special item:"times cited" in field"Notes",but it also have other item
in this field such as "ISI number" and "journal name". If I want to just
keep the "times cited" item and copy them into another field, what should I
do? Can I create a new filter to do this?

I think the best Journal list is not in table format, and realizing that I
only use Medical Journals, is found at PubMed in their Journal Listing.
This also has a link to the journals themselves for downloading the
articles.

Hi Jenny,
I had a short try on Staroffice 6 and EndNote4. Without having spent
much time two things happened: Of course StarOffice has no Add-In, so I
tried to use the "scan document" feature. Endnote gave me a dialogbox
with the hint that in Word I better use the addon feature. So StarOffice
probably is too good in imitating Word ...
The proprietary StarOffice format can't be scanned by EndNote 4.

As I said I didn't investigate too long. May be there is a workaround.

Greetings
Bernd-Michael

Hello: I am a novice user of endnote but wonder if anyone who accesses Jstor
through their university has been able to arrange to send citations from
Jstor directly to their library. Is is all on their info screen and all
that I have to do is pay attention? I tried to follow it once and got
nowhere. Should I try again, slower and more carefully, or is there a
secret that I am missing? Thanks and thank you for all the informative e
mails. Bien Baez (SUNY Albany).

See this article on EndNote's support website:
http://www.endnote.com/support/faqs/enfaq17.asp. I find that CWYW does
work with EN6 and Office XP - but you have to delete the
EN6Cwyw.WordXP.wll from the Word 2002 Startup folder, and make sure you
have a copy of EN6Cwyw.wll in there instead. But the article above
gives full details - and I have no problems.

Dear Inge,
So does my Endnote 6 today. Although, strange to say, it did not
yesterday. I don't get what the problem might have been... Anyway, many
thanks for making me try again.
Best,
Francisco

Dear Francisco,

I checked that with my EndNote (version 5 for Windows) and entered
"van de"
as one string under
Edit -> Preferences -> Sorting -> Author Field
and EndNote provides me with the correct sorting order:

Tytko, K. H. ...
van der Waerden, B. L. ...
Wilson, J. E. ...

Best regards,
inga

£Ĵhello£Ħ
Generally,Endnote use your brower's setting to access internet,so if
your brower can visit Pubmed(no matter using proxy or not),so does your
Endnote.
If your brower cant(say,do not use proxy)access internet, you can
try use socks4 or 5 proxy+sockscap32. Just add Endnote6.exe in sockscap32,it
can also access internet. This does work for my Endnote6.
Wish it can be any help.

Subject: Endnote 6: connection to PubMed

I have Endnote 6 newly installed on a computer with Windows 98 and
Netscape 7.0. Internet connection is via Modem using a proxy server.
Direct searching in different databases via the Connect command in
EndNote works well (e.g. Pardue University, University of Florida etc.)
However, connection to PubMed doesn' work at all.
I receive the errror message: "Connection error, Error reading records",
Windows error message: "12029".
The EndNote technical support team could not give an advice to solve
this problem.
Has anybody experienced the same and could fix it?

Subject: Reference for a DVD/VHS/Movie

Does anyone have a reference format for movies that works? I used the
film/broadcast one, which has all the right fields, but when it appears in
my works cited list, the director and principal performers are listed as
translators! (I'm using MLA style.)

In response to Pedro's question...
In a nutshell, if you are using PubMed to search MEDLINE:
1) Do your search
2) Select the references you want (click on the radio box next to the
reference) and add them to the clipboard.
You can keep searching and adding to the clipboard. The clipboard will hold
up to 500 citations.
3) Once you have finished your search, go to the clipboard.
4) Using the drop down display box, select MEDLINE as the format and then
click save. Save the file to a disk. The default name will be query.fgci but
you can give it a different name. Don't change the extension though.
5) Back in Endnote, choose the import option and select PubMed as the type.

That should do it. A more detailed article on this exact topic (with a few
other tips and hints) will be in the January issue of CIN: Computers,
Informatics, Nursing.

Subject: Connecting behind a firewall

Dear EndNoters,

I am using a Mac with OS 9.2.2 and EndNote 4.1.
Recently, I was able to connect the computer to a network which has a
firewall. I soon notice that I cannot access Pubmed with EndNote
(although I can access it via the web browser). Does anyone has a
suggestion to overcome this problem? Would it be possible to use the
internet browser to perform bibliographic searches and then save it to
EndNote? And how can I do this?

Many thanks. Best wishes,

Pedro M. Goncalves Pereira
