I'm not sure why your other office applications such as excel might be
affected, but the instability with EndNote 5 and Word XP might be solved by
checking this:
1. In Word, select "Tools > Options."
2. In the options window, select the "Edit" tab.
3. Uncheck "Keep track of formatting."
