Re:ASAP: Numbered references help
Author: Joan Petersilia    Posted: Sat, 10 Aug 2002 08:55:08 -0700
I have a book manuscript that I am trying to use the "numbered"
bibliography for, separately for each chapter. My problem is that I can't
get the numbers in the text to simply be listed sequential order, but
instead when the text refers to the same publication later in the chapter,
the reference number is listed as the previous reference number. Let me see
if I can explain this better.

When I am writing, and I hit reference #1, then later in the chapter I
refer to reference #1 again. The numbered system will show reference #1
always -- rather than it being listed as reference, say #25 if that is what
I am now up to in the listing. I have tried to play around with all of the
edit screens in the "numbered" reference type but with no success, and also
tried all of the "ibid" options as well. Nothing seems to be working. I
used EndNote 5.0. My publisher (Oxford University Press) doesn't want the
text referring to old reference (#1), but wants the reference listing at
the end of each chapter to simply be in sequential order (such that if the
same reference is repeated, it gets a new number in the referencing list,
not the old number when it was first mentioned). If I can't figure this
out for them, they want me to just use the author, year referencing system,
but my book has hundreds of references, and I don't want readers having to
be bothered with all of them unless they truly want to.

Can anyone help???? I would be very appreciative....
