Hello Marsh,
I'll take a stab at what might work for efficient gathering in the library
stacks...
If I understand you correctly, none of your Reference
Types say Journal Article or Chapter or Book...is that
correct? So first you need a way to differentiate the
articles from the books in your Endnote library since the formats are
shelved in two different parts of your library.
I was able to separate the Journal articles from the
books by searching my big library by Volume. Some search
boxes have to be added to do one long search string:
search Volume 1 OR Volume 2 OR Volume 3 etc
all the way up to Volume 9
Since Endnote uses character string searching (not truncation symbol)
Volume 5 will retrieve volume 5 as well as 52 or 508 or whatever the
characters/numerals are after 5.
Once the journal articles are in a separate Endnote library
you can change the Display List view in case you want to see if things are
progressing as planned... I display my list by Journal/Secondary Title,
then
Volume, then Number then Pages and last column Call Number (in
Preferences, Display fields). I don't think
you need Year unless you want to use it to match/confirm volume
number is correct.
Then I established the Sort order as toolbar Reference/Sort Library:
Call Number (low to high)
Volume
Number
Pages
I modified the Numbered style by adding Call Number at the
end of each reference type in Bibliography template.
The Numbered style works because I've actually sorted and then Selected
my articles in the list view before I stuck them into my Word document with
Insert Citations. There is no alphabetizing, etc. in the bibliography with
Numbered style, just my raw Sort. The following sorted first by Call
Number, then Volume, Number, Pages

{QUOTE EN.REFLIST }
{ QUOTE EN.REFLIST }Then you could take the remaining references in your
original library which
should be
books, chapters, dissertations, etc. and just sort those by Call Number
since it sounds like they would be arranged in the library in another a-z
shelving pattern. And use the Numberedwithcallnumbers modified style.
Anyway, you could try it...Above call numbers were just "created" <smile>
for my Endnote article records so I could see if I could do the sub-sorts,
etc..they are not authentic..
And thanks for asking the question --- it was an interesting exercise --
I've
had folks want to sort by Call Number before, but I've never tried by
Volume, Number and Pages And I always love to see how powerful
Endnote can be! <grin>
