I suspect this is because at some point you have deleted some references so
the numbers are higher than the actual current number of references in your
library. To avoid that probelm, when I want to delete a references I don't
just delete it but keep a placeholder in my library (eg by using the letter
A under Author) then add a real reference by writing the new authors etc
name over the top. This way you keep all the refence numbers.
