Need some help
Author: Sandy Friel-Patti    Posted: 04/08/2001 01:14:19 GDT
I have a reference library on my desktop that is too large to save to a
diskette; it will only go to a zip disk. I want to put a copy of this
library on my lap top that doesn't have a zip drive. I can't figure out
how to do it. (I want to take my lap top on a trip with me and I want
to be able to work on a manuscript while I'm travelling.)

To complicate matters, the desk top is running Windows 98 and the laptop
is running Windows 95.

How can I do this?

Hello Sandy,

Here are a couple of easy things to try:

1. zip compress the library and see if that makes it small enough to fit
onto a floppy.

2. Assuming both computers have modems, or network connections, upload
the file from your desktop machine to your web site, and then download
it from your laptop.

There are other possibilities, but it may be easiest, assuming you are
at a university, to seek help from UT's computer services.

Hi, What is the size of the library?

There are [at least] three possibilities:

(1) Use programs such as WinZip that do not require special drives;

(2) If there is a CD-ROM drive in your laptop, save the library on a CD
using a CD burner [CD-RW];

(3) Save the library on a web site such as Yahoo and retrieve it using the
laptop.

Good luck.

Hi Sandy,
One option would be to upload the file from your desktop to a web
space server like http://www.idrive.com/ or http://www.freedrive.com/
(I believe they're both free sign-up services), and then go online
via your laptop and download the file.

Depending on the size of your file, you could compress it with WinZip.
An evaluation version is available from www.winzip.com. My file is
fairly small, but I compressed it from 214 kb to 47 kb. Perhaps that
will work for you.

Re: Need some help

In response to the posting below about transferring EndNote libraries too
large for standard copying via a single standard 1.4 Megabyte diskette, the
real question is just how large is the Library file? If it's in the 2
Megabyte neighborhood then perhaps you could fit it onto a single diskette
as a "zipped" or compressed file (not to be confused with a "zip disk" file,
which has to do with the larger capacity medium not the file's compaction or
compression) using a utility like WinZip, available as a free-of-charge
download at http://www.winzip.com. If it is larger than just a couple of
Megs then you can use something WinZip calls "disk spanning". Here is the
lowdown on that process from WinZip's "Help Files":

"WinZip® makes it easy to create Zip files that "span" multiple disks. This
is useful if the files you are working with will not fit on one disk.

To make a Zip file that spans multiple disks, simply create a Zip file on a
removable disk, then add files to the Zip as you normally would. If the
disk fills during Add operation, you will be prompted for another disk.
Simply insert the next disk and click the OK button.
Important: disk spanning is not available when adding files to an existing
archive; it is only available while creating a new archive. Also note that
you cannot add or remove files from a Zip file that spans disks. WinZip
requires pre-formatted disks (you can format disks using My Computer or
Windows Explorer).

Example:
To zip the files in your c:\data folder to a Zip file called A:\DATA.ZIP:

1. Start WinZip.
2. Drag and drop the c:\data folder from My Computer or Windows Explorer to
the WinZip window.
3. In the Add dialog box, type the filename of the Zip file (A:\DATA.ZIP).
4. Click the Add button.

If more than one disk is needed, you will be prompted for additional disks."

Alternatively, you could try a simple Windows backup of the *.enl file
(EndNote library) on the source machine and then a "restore" on the target
machine. The Backup program is usually found under
Programs-->Accessories-->System Tools. Of course, the versions of Windows
and their respective Backup/Restore programs don't always dance well
together for some reason. Still, if it DOES work with your two machines
that would be a convenient way to automatically perform such fine transfers
with automatic disk spanning.

Best of Luck!
Bill Connelly

ZIP utilities allow you to span disks. The procedure depends on
the utility. For WinZip, you create a new archive on a diskette
then add your file(s) to the archive. When the diskette is full
you will be prompted to insert another until the archive has been
created. Keep track of the order (e.g., diskette #1, #2, etc.).
To extract the archive to the hard drive of your notebook
computer, insert diskette #1 and run WinZip. It will prompt you
to insert #2, #3, etc. as needed.

In principle, you should be able to use a data compacting program
such as StuffIt to i) compress your data and ii) store it on more than one
floppy disk. When you expand your data the program will assemble the
segments into a whole on your laptop.

Re: iDrive.com and FreeDrive.com

I believe iDrive has no more free services, and FreeDrive allows only 5MB of
free storage as a trial. Two others that are still free are: MyDocsOnline
(20MB free) and Yahoo Briefcase (30MB free). I don't know about
MyDocsOnline, but Yahoo Briefcase allows a maximum individual filesize of
5MB. One way around that is, export parts of the library in 4MB
pieces--pieces that are in EndNote import format and can be easily
reassembled after downloading them from your Yahoo Briefcase account.

Need some help on references to films

For APA style, references for films are supposed to have the function
(Director, Producer, Writer etc.) of the primary contributors in
parentheses after the name. For example:
Fincher, D.(Director), & Uhls, J. (Screenwriter). (1999). Fight Club
[Film]. Los Angeles: Twentieth Century Fox.

I can't seem to figure out how to get Endnote to list this function
after the names. Does anyone have any advice as to how to do this?

Thanks in advance.
