Connecting to Current Contents, etc.
Author: Jolyon Wurr    Posted: 21/08/2000 23:16:37 GDT
Dear Colleagues,
I'm wondering if there are any North American based university researchers
amongst us who are able to make direct connections to Current Contents of
FirstSearch via EndNote (direct Z39.5 client connections). I am aware of the
possibilities for downloading records obtained via WWW connections and
importing the records to EndNote via filters but this does not speak to my
current need. My interest is in whether direct Z39.5 access to these
databases has been arranged by any universities for general use (especially
remote site use) by their students and faculty (a
commercial/legal/bureaucratic problem, not a technical one).
Thank you,
Jolyon Wurr

Hi Jolyon,

Yes, Current Contents is accessible via Z39.50. I used to access CC from my
previous uni in Australia (UNSW). Ok so that's no where near North America,
but i thought the info might still be useful. It was pretty much password
based security, so accessing from a remote site was no problems. All we had
to do was apply to the library for a password (from memory it was only given
to staff and postgrad students). I think there was also a limit on the total
number of users at any given time (same for the web).

EndNote (3.0) worked fine, although i made a couple of changes to the
connections to allow the importing of affiliation fields and so forth. Other
than that, it was a breeze, and waaaaaay useful. But a couple of hints...
1) the EN searches are not as powerful as the CC interface on the web page,
so I often found it's easier to do your lit search via the web and then go
via the Z39.50 connection to import them into EN;
2) the EN Z39.50 search will accept the same wild cards (?, *) as the CC
webpage when using the EN connection, This is not noted in the EN doc's as
far as I know, presumably because such wildcards aren't noted in the
connection file and aren't available internally to EN (hint hint
ResearchSoft). They're very useful for searches including things like
aluminium/aluminum, colour/color, etc

Well i hope that helps.

regards matt

Hello,

Regarding the connection to Current Contents Online, I am not
sure about North American universities but I know that the
Australian National University has established a connection file,
you might want to look at the following site for downloads, etc

http://anulib.anu.edu.au/training/endnote/anu_en_extras.html

I am not sure whether this is specific only to the ANU, or
whether the connection file will work for other universities. It
does ask for your user ID and password when you log on. This also
has links to endnote connections through web pages of Deakin
University and the University of Queensland.

Hope that helps,
Kirsty
