To elaborate on Greg Fry's prior posting you will need to edit the APA output style's "Author Lists" setting by doing the following:   1. Go to the EndNote toolbar, select EDIT, OUTPUT STYLES, EDIT APA 6th. This will cause the APA 6th output style window to pop-up.   2. In the left column of the output style options, locate "Bibliography" then click to select AUTHOR LISTS.  This will display the Author List options illustrated in Greg Fry's attached image.   3. Under the "Abbreviated Author List" section, click to select the second option ("If 7 or more authors, list the first 6") to enable further editing.  Then where the", et. al" is shown, delete the comma.   4. Close the APA 6th output style.  If prompted to save the changes, note that the default setting will save the changes to a different file name: APA 6th Copy.  If you elect to use the default name you'll need to change the output style setting in both EndNote and MS Word to reflect the "APA 6th Copy" output style. Otherwise the corrected style will not take effect.

Two things:   1) Under the left column heading "My Library" is "All References" highlighted?  If not, click to select All References.   2) Resizethe library window by placing your cursor at the bottom edge of the library. you'll see a vertical double-headed arrow appear.  Just click and "drag" the edge of the library window downward to enlarge the display.   Also note that the free trial version has a time limit (was it 30 days?).

When they trial version on EndNote expires it will switch to a limited viewer.  After it expires it will only display 10 references at a time.  If you change the sorting order of your library by clicking on the column headings, you should see other references, but it will still be limited to displaying the first 10 based on how they are sorted.

Two things:   1. Add a comma in the author field to differentiate the name of an organization from the name of a person.  So the entry would appear as: U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2. Check the output style's template* to see whether the template's fields correspond with the Report fields.  A mis-match (i.e., missing fields in the output style template) may be responsible for generating odd-looking results.   ___________ *Go to the EndNote toolbar, select EDIT, OUTPUT STYLES, EDIT [name of the style you're using]

I know this is an old post but I ran into the same problem and I think I may have a solution of sorts, so I thought I'd post in case someone else runs into this:   I use SugarSync to sync between two computers. For a while it all worked fine, but this week every time I worked on my EndNote library on one computer, I would go to the other computer, wait for SugarSync to finish syncing all the files (it would list all files as synced and backed-up) and then when I opened my EndNote library I would get an error message saying my library was corrupt and needed recovering.   What I discovered is this: SugarSync was *saying* that it had downloaded all of the files, but when I went into the SugarSync file manager for the last computer on which I had edited the library, one of the files from EndNote's "rdb" library appeared as "pending download". Once I manually downloaded that file to the computer, the EndNote library worked just fine, no need for recovery or anything.   So, if you run into this problem, go into your sugarsync file manager and make sure that all of the EndNote files have really been downloaded.

EndNote X4 has major known issues on Mac OS X 10.4. These include but may not be limited to: Inability to perform successful online searches from within the EndNote program. EndNote tools will not load in Word 2008. You may or may not receive error messages stating the bundle file could not be loaded. Inability to search PDFs. How did you deploy the upgrade and was 2003 upgraded at the same time (and before or after endnote - as it needs to be after?)   Did you upgrade from a previous version of Endnote?  Which version?  In our experience, upgrading from X  (and maybe X1) to a later version often leaves behind old toolbars or links to the old program that causes problems.  X was installed in user folders which are often not cleanned up, unless the individual user is performing the uninstall.  X2  and later versions install in "all user" folders and the upgrade process goes much smoother.  If this is your problem, reply, and I will dig out the clean up procedures our IT people employed.

Did you check the Author Lists setting in the Citation section of your output style?  [Go to the EndNote toolbar, select EDIT, OUTPUT STYLES, EDIT name of your style. Then locate "Citations" and click "Authors Lists" to display the options.] It sounds like the settingsmay be off for the "Abbreviated Author List - First Appearance" and the "Abbreviated Author List - Subsequent Appearances". Both options allow for designating the number of authors and how many should be listed.

If you don't wish to have author name initials to be displayed, check the Name Format* (see attached image) setting of the APA 6th to see that  the "Initials" setting is set to: Last Name Only.   Note that any changes to the APA 6th output style file will be saved as a copy (i.e., APA 6th Copy) so you will need to change your EndNote and MS Word settings to use the APA 6th Copy.   ____________ *Go to the EndNote toolbar, select EDIT, OUTPUT STYLES, EDIT APA 6TH.  The APA 6th output style window will be displayed onscreen.

Then you gotta either edit the two citations so they are both the same with respect to the first author (preferred) as Endnote thinks they are different - or edit the style so that it (in cases where there were two authors with the same surname) incorrectly doesn't indicate that fact.  That setting is a tick box (edit output style) under citations, Author Name "Use initials only for primary authors with the same name"  - unselecting this should get rid of the initials, but that might be the wrong thing to do if they really are different authors.

Dear Andyn,   Thanks for the response, but won't fix the problem--that simply controls repeated references to a single author within a single footnote. My problem is that the when two consecutive footnotes contain contain books by the same author, the second one is replaced by a line instead of ibid.   Thanks, Austin

There is another setting that may provide what you need. Try the "If the Same Source Repeats in Consecutive Citations" option which is in the Bibliography's Repeated Citation pane. You may also need to adjust the setting for the Author List too since I think the default is three dashes.    Mathilda, the EndNote team

I'm having the exact same problem outlined above. I have tried both of the solutions offered here, but the problem persists.   I work with two different styles. One is the Society of Biblical Literature and one is Chicago 16 A. The way I've got the SBL style set up doesn't produce this problem with repeated authors...I have gone through the Chicago settings and SBL settings side by side, and no matter what I try nothing seems to work.   Is there a way to edit the output styles that I'm missing? Perhaps a setting elsewhere in the software?   Thanks.

Save the style you believe is correct but not being correctly formated, to a completely different output style name and make sure that name is being used in the manuscript (in the format bibliography dialog box).

Hi Leanne,   Still no dice, I'm afraid.   After a little more searching in the forums, I found this post (http://community.thomsonreuters.com/t5/EndNote-How-To/Line-instead-of-author-s-name-in-footnote/td-p/5110/highlight/true/page/2) where you uploaded a style file that was intended to solve the problem we're describing here.   I loaded it up and everything looks to be working now. It is Chicago 15 instead of 16, but it will work.   Curiously, when I compare the settings of the style you uploaded with the style I'm trying to get to work, they're virtually identical...yet mine still has the issue!   It's funny, I bought this software thinking it was going to make life easier :)   E

Basically, this is what is happening. I have no idea how someone would even set it up to do this if they wanted to--it's like the program is using both a line and ibid for repeated authors--I just want it to use ibid. If I had two hypothetical books by the same author, and I had two notes referring to the first book, and then one note referring to the second book, this is what it would look like:     [1] Author 1,  Book 1, X. [2] Ibid, X. [3]_____, Book 2, X.     But this is what I want:   [1] Author 1, Book 1, X. [2] Ibid., X [3] Ibid, Book 2, X.   Its nice to know that I am not the only one with this problem

Thanks for much for the response! This style does work as I want it to--but may I ask, what is the difference? Here is the style that I created, and as far as I can tell, all of the relevant options under the Repeated Citations heading in the Footnote section are the same--so what is causing the two styles to treat repeated references to different works by the same authors differently?   Thanks, Austin

Hi,   You can check the two styles by looking at the author settings in each file:   Open your style Browse to the Footnotes Section Click on Author Lists Scroll down to "For Subsequent Works by the Same Author" The setting should be "Print the author list as defined above"   If not then switch the radio button to this setting and try your style again.   Thanks,   Cheryl - The EndNote Team

It sounds like your Instant Formatting setting has been turned off.  In the MS Word ribbon, select the EndNote X4 tab.  Within the "Bibliography" part locate and click on the tiny arrow in the bottom right corner (see image). This will then display the Format Bibliography window.  Click on the Instant Formatting tab and click the "Turn On" button, then click OK to close the Format Bibliography window.

Do you have service pack 1 installed on your computer? You have to have this before installing Endnote. I'm not sure if this will fix the problem but it would be worth checking.   http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads?pid=Mactopia_Office2008&fid=395D1487-A3A6-4106-A0F8-4D6E1D6D89D2#viewer   Regards, Cathy

Are you downloading: 1) using a direct connection to the Internet; or 2) through a network?   If the former (direct connection), you don't mention what browser you're using but have you tried a different browser to download the program?  If the latter (network), you should check with the system administrator as you may need access permission to download, read/install the EndNote program.   Also suggest you contact tech support: http://www.endnote.com/support/entechform.asp

I think I have service package 2 which might explain it, I had thought it just needed SP1 or above, but if it's only compatible with SP1 that would be why it isn't cooperating. Is it a good idea or even possible to download SP1 to replace SP2?

Greetings, To troubleshoot the mentioned behavior, I would start by closing EndNote altogether.   Once EndNote has been closed, you will want to navigate into the "Filters" folder, which is EndNote program folder.  This folder is normally accessible by browsing to the following location: Windows 32-bit Operating System:  C:\Program Files\EndNote X4\Filters 64-bit Operating System:  C:\Program Files (x86)\EndNote X4\Filters Mac                //Applications/EndNote X4/Filters Once you've made it to the mentioned Filters folder, look for a file called "MEDLINE (OvidSP).enf" and rename it to "AAMEDLINE (OvidSP).enf".  After you've renamed the filter, try exporting from the Medline database again with the Direct Export functionality to see if it is working properly.  Please let me know if this helps.     Best Regards, Jimmy M. Hi, I am also having problems with endnote after installing the new  version (X4.02) on my Mac OS X 10.4.11- after installing the new version all the work i had done in Word (2004) was deleted and i could not access this document again as every time i clicked on it to write something it would not respond and i would have to Force quit the program. I can see from the previous message that this new version of endnote is not recommended for mac os x 10.4 so i was wondering if this also includes mac os x 10.4.11?   Thanks

Check the citation "Authors Lists" option of your output style:   1. Go to the EndNote toolbar, select EDIT, OUTPUT STYLES, EDIT [name of your style].   2. In the style's dialog box locate the "Citations" heading and just below click to select: Author Lists.   3. On the right of the Authors Lists options, for both the "Abbreviated Author List - First Appearance" loante the "and  abbreviate with" phrase and in the text box delete the comma so the phrase is: et al.      Repeat this for the "Abbreviated Author List - Subsequent Appearance" if applicable.   4. Close the style to save the changes.  The changes will be saved as a copy so you'll need to change both EndNote and MS Word to use the output style file copy.

I may have the same problem. I need to construct a  research note page  that supplies thee following data.   Type of source:                 book, journal, etc Cite key:                             (author, date) Abstract:                             Downloaded or supplied info on content of source Keywords:                          words significant to the source (database/library keywords and my own Excerpt:                              My thoughts and learnings relative to comment below Comment on this source: A quote or paraphrase   I have not used Endnotes in a few years, attempts to construct a page using the selected bibliographic menu item did not produce the results need.  I have renamed and assigned custom fields. I have considered formatting a style template, not sure if doing so will meet the need and not interfere with normal citations/bibliographic settings when writing a paper or require my constantly changing reference fields.  LouOx2

Two thoughts...   1. Depending upon your version of EndNote you could generate a "Subject Bibliography" based on your EndNote library using specific field codes (i.e., Reference Type, Author, Year, Abstract, KeyWords, Research Notes, Notes). The result will be displayed in a separate window from which you could copy and paste the content into an MS Word document.  To check if your version of EndNote has the "Subject Bibliography" option, go to the toolbar, select TOOLS then see if it's listed.  If not, you may could try downloading the trial version of EndNote (which runs for 30 days) or consider option #2 below.   2. Develop you own output style using the existng EndNote reference fields to correspond as follows (below).  The output style might be more practical (than the Subject Bibliography)  if you plan to have ongoing use for this particular format.   Type of Source ---> Reference Type Cite key --> Author, Year Abstract --> Abstract Keywords --> Keywords Excerpt --> Research Notes* Comment on this source --> Notes*   *It's a personal choice as to which EndNote field (Research Notes, Notes) would be the best "fit".

Fantastic with the adjustments you noted!!  Ya'll are the best.  One last thing.  I know I can change styles and copy formatted to include a regular bib entry at the end of the document is there anyway to also generate an APA 6 bib at the end of document at the same time?  I know I am asking a lot.  Either way it goes I am telling my classmates to go with Endnotes as I have for years now! Since the output style's been modified to generate the annotated "note card" content (as you indicate on an earlier posting) that's what the style is now "programmed" to do.  So simultaneoustly generating both the note cards and an APA formatted bibliography with the same style does not appear to be an option at the moment.   However,  there are still ways to generate a bibliography: 1) Use the "Subject Bibliography" option then copy and paste the results at the end of the document [Note: Go to the toolbar, select Tools > Subject Bibliography];  and as you noted, 2) Generate a separate document just for the APA bibliography, then convert the document to a text file and copy and paste the bibliography into the "note card" document.   You can try the two options to see which better suits your work style but either way, it's still a time-saver.

Here's another "old school" option to consider.  It's easy to change the style layout so the APA formatted reference appears with each note card. Then it's just a matter of consolidating the references by copying and pasting each one into a single list at the end of the document.   Here's a modified output style with the notecard and APA 6th formatting.  You can experiment to see which method (described here and in prior posting) meets your work style.

What version did you upgrade from?  The field you are seeing is the "figure attachment" field which appeared maybe 5 or 6 versions ago.  It holds one file and many of us used that as a convenient place to save a PDF before they added the File attachment field which can hold multiple copies of figures.  If all you ever used the fig attachment for was PDFs and never to hold Figures to use the relatively useless insert fig option, there is a convenient transfer you just need to use once.  Under References>figure, there is a conversion.  Then change your display to show the file attachments rather than figure field and it will look like it should.

Greetings, The JAMA style has been created to show abbreviated journal names, but only when a user has the abbreviated names stored within their Journals term list.  We have a pre-defined list of journal names, a file called medical.txt, which includes nearly 9000 terms based off of the Index Medicus list of terms.  The process for importing this term list is described on our website here-   http://endnote.com/support/faqs/Styles/faq5.asp     Regarding the appearance of 'vol', I've looked at this output style and I see that the Generic bibliographic template includes this information.  If you're citing a reference that does not have unique bibliographic template defined, the mentioned Generic template would be applied to this reference.  Additionally, if the library record associated with this reference does not include information within the Volume field, the 'vol' label may appear erroneously.  To troubleshoot this aspect of the formatting, please find a reference within the bibliography that is including 'vol', then let me know which reference type is associated to this record within your EndNote library.     Best Regards, Jimmy M. Hi there, I'm experiencing a couple of problems with my endnote cite while you write in Pages '09 for macbook.  My thesis deadline is in 4 days so I'd appreciate it if you could get back to me as soon as possible! Firstly, the repeated authors function does not seem to be working.  I have checked through the 'author' field in all of my endnote references, and all of the ones containing the same author are printed identically.  However, when I create a bibliography in Pages, only some of the repeated authors are replaced by a dash ––– and others (seemingly randomly) still present the (repeated) name of the author.    Another question i have is about a filmography.  Is there any way of effectively creating two bibliographies so that one contains all of the film and broadcast references (i.e. a filmography) and one creates everything else? Since this is in such common usage by film studies scholars I'd be surprised if it wasn't possible, I just haven't figured out how to do it yet.   many thanks,   Clara

A quick test by entering United Nations, in the Author field then exporting the result (via a shortened version of the Tab Delimited output style) did not display the comma in the .txt file - see attached image of test result. Suggest you recheck your output style and retest.  Also note, when typing in the org name do not insert a blank space following the comma.   (You didn't mention the version of EndNote you're using but am assuming you've updated to the current patch for that version.)
