how to efficiently combine many libs into 1?
Author: Alexander Shenkin    Posted: Mon, 31 Mar 2008 18:13:54 -0400
Hello All,

I have about 82 separate libraries, and I'm sick and tired of trying to
remember where the @#$! I've put this or that reference. So, I'd like
to combine them all into 1 - if for nothing else than for ease of
retrieval (perhaps I'll still keep them in separate libs for normal
usage). Is there any better way than opening up each one and
copy-pasting them into one combined library? Any scripts that will rip
through and combine them automatically?

Another wrinkle is that some of my libs are in the old EN format - ugh.

On another note - has anyone seen Papers for the Mac? Man - that is
sweet! I'm almost tempted to get a mac just for that program!
ISI-Thompson better hope they don't port it to windows!

thanks,
allie

You want to import them into one, throwing away the duplicates. But I
don't know of a script to do it.

I would suggest that you combine related libraries and deal with the
duplicates before you put all the references in one big library.
Combining into one library automatically and then trying to find the
duplicates seems like a loooooong job. If you can make say 8 libraries
covering your general areas of interest you might not need the one
humongous library.

Perhaps I should clarify my reply: the elimination of duplicates is one
of the import options when importing one endnote library into another.

Open one of the libraries save it to a new name ("combined"?) and then
File>Import select the second library and set the Import options
(Endnote Library) Duplicates (discard duplicates - or put duplicates in
a different library) and I assume you don't need any text translation,
although I haven't tested it on older libraries.

repeat x 80 more times :-{

hi,

I don't know which version you guys are using, but it is not a problem
at all to find all duplicates and discard them with a couple of clicks
with Endnote X1, so why is a script necessary ? It is also a very easy
job to organise your libraries in a single library because you can
create a maximum of 500 custom groups (more than enough for 99.999% of
us) in this library.
