is there any way to get references to use square brackets? i need it
when a reference is contained within parens. for example:
plants consume CO2 (as we all know [smith 2000]) for their carbon
source.
And now for an unrelated thought:
is there a competitor for Thompson's reference manager apps on Windows?
I don't think there really is. Web-based solutions don't count, in my
opinion. I wonder if development on endnote would cook along faster if
there were. Didn't Thompson buy up all the other reference manager
companies at one point?
thanks,
allie

Change the round ( ) square [ ] in the citation template.

Not really as a one off. But very easy if you want them to always be in
square brackets. Edit the style, citation.
Most competing products were bought up by ISI but they are still
available.
F. Dell'Orsocompares many of them here
http://www.burioni.it/forum/ors-bfs12/text/6e12400-2.html and
Northwestern recently hosted a "citefest" which will be reported here.

Hello,
You could use "Edit Citation" and remove the author and date, then type
in the prefix box: as we all know [smith 2000]
The result should appear as:
... plants consume CO2 (as we all know [smith 2000]) for their carbon
source.
And the bibliography will still format the reference in the appropriate
style.
