Greetings, EndNote Discussion List Subscribers:

Thomson ResearchSoft has some exciting news for you. We are
transitioning this list from a traditional "list-serv" email format to a
new, web-based forum format.

This new format will allow for many great new features, such as:

* Categorized & fully searchable posts to help you find what you
need more quickly

* Easily accessible forum archives

* Ability to post clickable links

* Image posting for screen shots & other troubleshooting
purposes

* Private messaging for "off-line" discussion

...and more! As before, Thomson Scientific Technical Support will be
monitoring posts for spam and abuse. They will also be offering
suggestions and solutions where appropriate.

Feel free to begin creating your accounts and logging on one of the
following two forums:

http://forums.thomsonscientific.com/ts/board?board.id=EndNote

http://forums.thomsonscientific.com/ts/board?board.id=EndNoteWeb

This list will remain active until May 7th, 2008 while we transition. If
you have questions about the transition, or improvements for the forums,
feel free to post them to the EndNote Interest-List or on the
Suggestions forum.

We hope you're as excited about these new options as we are, and look
forward to seeing you on our new forums.

Thanks for your message.

Please, don't retire the list! At least provide a list <-> forum gateway. For offline work and searches, as well as for the convenience of storing messages at one single place, a well-organized mailbox beats a forum (or worse, several forums) by orders of magnitude.

Hello Leanne,

You can actually subscribe for email delivery to a message, a thread, or
a board (I've just asked the folks who set up the forums for us to add
'board' as an option, which should happen tomorrow). The delivery
options are immediate, daily digest, or weekly digest, very similar to
what's available for the current listserv. There are more options
available in terms of delivery format and such, but all in all the
experience should be very similar to the current listserv. The only
drawback I can see over the current listserv is the inability to post a
message via email, you would need to go to the forum itself to do so.

The plus is that this is a persistent, searchable online forum that new
members will be able to view in their entirety, which allow for content
file sharing and instant posting without having to wait for a moderator
to send messages through.

In order to subscribe to a message, while viewing the message click on
"Options" menu in the upper right and choose "Add this Message to my
Subscriptions". To subscribe to a thread, while viewing a thread click
on "Thread Options" in the upper left and choose "Add this Thread to my
Subscriptions". The same thing will be available under "Board Options"
soon.

Additionally, RSS feeds are available in the same way, as a "Subscribe
to this Thread's RSS Feed" option in the same menu.

I would have no interest in an online forum, either. I'm happy to create
a Google Group, though I think it should be someone who has more
involvement. I rarely use EndNote anymore.

Ditto
It is so easy to scan emails. I don't object to Thomson providing a good
searchable interface so people can search for answers to issues, or for
blog options if people like that, but I do not have time for blogs,
wikis and the like.

Me too
Lists have MANY advantages for busy people, can't they be run on
parallel
Also there are a zillion forums, making it even more onerous

Many might like to know about Zotero
www.zotero.org/

Seems to do everything that endnote does, including plug-in for WORD and
much easier download of current viewed web page
Will have fewer styles - but relatively easy to make one's own

Best

EndNote List Announcement
Author: PASCALE AG/5040    Posted: Wed, 9 Apr 2008 13:21:46 -0400
A pity. Afraid I'm going to have to tune out for a while then. Will
surely miss that daily email.
Having to go to the website, creating an account AGAIN, having to scroll
through all the screens (even if it is for subscribing to the list).
Too time consuming I'm afraid. It will be a while before I find the time
to actually get to that.
It's a pity (but understandable) you can't just keep the listserv in
place next to your newly built forum....
regards,
pascale

Greetings, EndNote Discussion List Subscribers:

Thomson ResearchSoft has some exciting news for you. We are
transitioning this list from a traditional "list-serv" email format to a
new, web-based forum format.

This new format will allow for many great new features, such as:

* Categorized & fully searchable posts to help you find what you
need more quickly

* Easily accessible forum archives

* Ability to post clickable links

* Image posting for screen shots & other troubleshooting
purposes

* Private messaging for "off-line" discussion

...and more! As before, Thomson Scientific Technical Support will be
monitoring posts for spam and abuse. They will also be offering
suggestions and solutions where appropriate.

Feel free to begin creating your accounts and logging on one of the
following two forums:

http://forums.thomsonscientific.com/ts/board?board.id=EndNote

http://forums.thomsonscientific.com/ts/board?board.id=EndNoteWeb

This list will remain active until May 7th, 2008 while we transition. If
you have questions about the transition, or improvements for the forums,
feel free to post them to the EndNote Interest-List or on the
Suggestions forum.

We hope you're as excited about these new options as we are, and look
forward to seeing you on our new forums.

BUT wouldn't it be even better if the software was so good and the HELP
was so efficient that people didn't need to keep asking questions about
how to get it to do things. Now there's a challenge for the producers.

Ditto
It is so easy to scan emails. I don't object to Thomson providing a good
searchable interface so people can search for answers to issues, or for
blog options if people like that, but I do not have time for blogs,
wikis and the like.

Hi Barb,

I'm replying to your note as it was pretty typical of many comments in
postings to this list so far.
I'd like to offer a brief reply to all those who have been--shall I say
hesitant?--to the idea of a form, and who have stated that one doesn't
have time to log into such a forum.

First, and as background, I've been working with list servers and fora
since just about the day they first started in the personal computer
area (almost 25 years now!), and I have made my experiences with many
types of community communication setups (LANS, Chat software, Internet
Voice over IP) etc.

Although I've only just gotten started with EndNote, I can see that a
forum would be better for me: I don't have time to weed through all the
messages that this list server generates. (No finger wagging here,
folks!) Since I first enrolled in this forum (March 12), there have
been 104 postings. That makes 31 days--for an average of 3.2+ postings
per day. (Of course, some days, go "empty," and some have avalanches (11
postings for 17 March, 12 for 4 April). However, only two postings have
been of interest to me: the one on Zotero, and the one dealing with
Google Scholar--which was in response to a posting of mine and Kath.

For me, to have to access this mailbox every day when something drops
into the basket, and to find that about 2% of the postings meet my
interest is a kind of waste of my time. However, by going to the web
forum (its setup seems to be pretty clean--there are fours sections, 1)
EndNote General, 2) How to, 3) Styles, Filters, and connections, and 4)
product suggestions), I can quickly look into the area I'm interested
in, or I can post a question (same thing here, except the postings in
this list don't get "clotted" into theme areas as easily.

Another aspect: the forum allows one to tag all postings in a forum
section to "read"--which lets me know immediately what is new or not.
And: the discussion threads are easier to follow.

Do you really need to stay on top of all postings about EndNote *as*
they drop in? I can imagine that some folks that are really into EndNote
might prefer that. However, for users that are interested in specific
answers to specific questions, I think the forum concept offers a viable
alternative.

I am subscribed to private and university-collegiate (private list for
profs) platforms, and I would hate to lose the spontaneous communication
they offer. However, if I were to subscribe to a list server that was
devoted to say, use of Word or Excel, I'd go bananas: too much input!!

I don't see any reason why folks couldn't start up a yahoo or google
list server for EndNote issues.

For my purposes though, I'd say the forum may be the better answer for
me.

And one more comment if I may: we can already see the moaning and
groaning about the forum concept (although there have been positive
responses too). However, once one has read about the pros and cons, I'm
sure the comments will still be coming in. With the forum concept, I can
choose to read that stuff or not--as the threads are pretty transparent.

So, as the subject line sez: you have the choice! You can use the new
forum, or you can roll your own! Sounds like a win-win situation to me!

FWIW

Best to you all.

All right, then a forum is better for your needs, I can appreciate that.
Some of us have a different feeling. I for one subscribe to many mailing lists, and the fact that I receive all messages, conveniently sorted in mailboxes by carefully constructed rules is a life saver. If I had to visit dozens of forums I would go nuts.
And for those who would suggest that an RSS feed is an adequate answer:
I don't think so. How do you reply to an RSS item?

> Another aspect: the forum allows one to tag all postings in a forum

Threading and tagging have been features of mail readers for years. Plus sorting according to whatever criterium you want. Plus custom subfolder creation. Plus structured searches.

I agree, offering a forum is a valuable propostion. But removing the mailing list isn't!

Fine, don't. It doesn't make it so for everybody else.

Because we have this list that's working nicely, thank you very much?

As far as I am concerned, the only win-win situation is to have a forum with a bi-directional mail gateway. Otherwise someone will get frustrated! And splitting the discussions into one forum and a completely unrelated mailing list is certainly not a good solution.

Which is exactly why I want the list to continue and will not be happy with an RSS feed replacement: using e-mail, there's no need to go anywhere to reply. I'm already where I need to be.

Once again, the solution as I see it: a mailing list + a forum, with a bi-directional gateway in between. Everybody wins.

And this is very common (in fact, maybe the norm).

I simply do not use web forums. Period.

They take too many resources (time, another application open, usernames,
passwords, clutter, ads, etc.) from me.

In a recent poll on a site I operate, the Number 1 complaint that users
had about other sites was their reliance on web forums.

The software is usually very bad, and at the least, not consistent
across sites (we have to learn not only new usernames/passwords, but
also must learn to use dozens of different fora software, different
layouts, etc.)

If this list were not set-up to be 'moderated', then there would not be
any need for human management on a daily basis. I have never understood
why this EndNote list had to have messages approved in the first place.
That's an unneeded tax on time for someone...list software is very
mature.

But, alas, there was no gathering of data from this list (do you want a
forum?) and so we are just told that the list is being replaced.

That's not customer service, really.

There are no mentions of why this change is made, what is hoped to be
gained from it or anything.

Of what I've read, the reasons are false: mailing lists provide
archives, so that argument is moot; lists provide human-free
management, so, again, moot.

I'm very discouraged by this change, and simply will not visit the web
forum.
