Where can I get a complete list of "Endnote Tags and Corresponding Fields?"
I notice that on the list given on page 164 (EndNote 8 Manual
(Win).pdf) there are only 40 tags but the Generic Reference type
given in Appendix C (pg 550) has 51 fields. How / where can I get a
complete tag list or what tags should I use for fields not having a
corresponding tag?
In particular, I would like to find a tag for "Alternate Title" to be
used in a Journal Article (pg 560) reference corresponding to
"Alternate Journal."
The section "The Alternate Journal Field" talks about importing from
on-line resources that may include both a full and abbreviated
journal title, so I assume there must be a way to "tag" a reference
for import with both name types. Can you please tell me how?
There is also no tag for "Electronic Resource Number."
Thank you very much in advance.
Andrew

Look at Edit/Import Filters/Open Filter Manager
Find "EndNote Import" and press [edit]
On the left, go to "templates", and on the right, choose your reference
type. I counted 52 tags, but I was in a hurry...
The Endnote reference type table is set up so that Alternate Journal is the
same field as Alternate Title. They are just called different things
depending on how you format the record; if you switch a record from a book
to a Jn article, you will find the info in Alternate Title automatically is
transferred to Alternate Journal.
As such, they both import from the same tag (%O) (that's the letter "o");
ERN's tag is %R... but, as I said, you can find this in the templates
section of the import filter. Endnote differentiates between the %O of a Jn
article and the %O of a book by what is in the %0 (that's a ZERO) of the
record according to the scheme on p.163 of the manual.
As to the tags you should use if there isn't an existing one, well: a)
there's a tag per field for EN's generic type, so the situation shouldn't
arise; and b) if it did, as you can edit the filter itself to your own
specs, you would probably just make a tag up on the spot. If your e-source
has a supplied set of tags, you'd, of course, use those.
Oh, and by the way, a complete list of tags and fields would (I'm pretty
sure) be Appendix C with the tags from the filter written in to the left of
the "Generic" column.
Hope this helps,
Michael.

You have to remember that the EndNote manual is written before the new version
of the software is tested and finalised. There are quite a lot of things in
the software that aren't in the manual, and vice versa!
To find a complete list of the EndNote tags in version 8, click on Edit>Import
Filters. Open the Filter Manager, highlight "EndNote Import" and click on the
Edit button.
When the filter edit window opens, select "Templates" on the left-hand side.
Now use the drop-down menu to see the template for the "Generic" reference
type. I think that all the tags are there.
