Endnote troubles
Author: Jamercha    Posted: Fri, 4 Apr 2003 09:57:36 -0600
Hello,

My name is John Merchant and I am a graduate student at the University of
Chicago. I have had a lot of trouble with Endnote 5 recently, actually
Endnote
5.0.2. As I have learned from reading the notes posted to this list serve,
there seem to be a lot of problems with the update. I had no troubles with
Endnote until I installed the patch.

My problems are various and ranging in severity. Part of the problem, I
think,
is that I am writing a long document, my dissertation, and I use a lot of
Polish words, my topic. For brevity's sake, I'll just list the problems:

1. Every now and then, without warning, my document will freeze when my
cursor
goes over a footnote superscript number (the pop-up box will be blank and
that
is when I know it's frozen). If I force quit out of Word, both Word and
Endnote
close. I have tried adding more memory to both programs and experimented
with
testing if it's an Endnote problem, but it has to be b/c it only occurs
around
footnotes.

2. More and more my document gets corrupted, such that in a given section,
say
10 pages, the footnote superscript numbers are turned into little boxes
and
the formattting is altered (entire paragraphs are single space). I try to
fix
this, but it happens again in another section days or weeks later.

3. The citations I insert in the footnotes do not look like what I entered
into
my library - the font, a Polish font, is replaced with a general Times font,

and the cases have been changed - in Polish only the first letter is
capitalized and Endnote makes all the words capitalized, as well as a few
letters here and there inside the words. Is this just because it's a
temporary
citation?

Those are the big problems for me right now. It makes me nervous, b/c as my
dissertation gets bigger and bigger I am afraid something cataclysmic will
happen.

Hope I am sending this to the right address.

Sincerely,

John Merchant

Hi John,
I encountered many of the problems that you have described as well.
The first two are MS Word problems. I assume that you are using Office
98 (that's where I encountered my problems). There is a patch. I forget
which one it is but I seem to remember that, oddly, it is labeled as being
for Power Point. What seems to happen is that the un-updated version
of Word decides that you have too much formatting and begins
randomly eliminating it (like paragraph formatiing). My advice is to
update before you go any further (the patch should solve the
problem...no need to buy new software). If you're using Office 2001 then
maybe the problem has carried over and they didn't fix it.
Good luck
John
