Author: Larry    Posted: Tue, 11 Mar 2003 09:51:05 +0100
Hi Carolyn,

I am replying from the endnote interest digest. I am still using Endnote 5
with OS9.2 MSWord 2001 and I also am not able to unformat Endnote refs
from documents created with Word98 and Endnote 3.1.3.

Occasionally I get an error message saying to try to resave the document as
Word.rtf. Then reopen that document and resave as Word2001. Then unformat
citations, but it simply does not work. MSWord recognizes the fields
because the citations go grey if I click on them.

So in the end I have found it more quick to temporarily reput the Endnote
Addin in the OFFICE:WORD:Startup folder and start Endnote 3.1.3 and goto
ENDNOTE from MSWord2001. Now the Endnote 3.1.3 commands are accessible and
you can unformat citations. Close everything and restart from Endnote 5
and now the refs are recognized.

Whether this will work in Endnote 6, I do not know.

hope this helps,

Larry

When I upgraded from 3.1.3 to version 6 they (EndNote support) told me that
it was to do with something in word, if I'm not mistaken. Anyway, to get
around the problem one is to unformat citations in 3.1.3 and then open the
the file in 6.

Hi, I sent my problem with not getting back to the right place in my doc to
Endnote Support (see question below) and they sent the following which was
helpful in clearing up the problem. It seems to work like a pc re boot.
Sort of clearing the throat of the situation. One more problem was left and
that was that after I did this the cites would not format automatically.
The Endnote folks thought I might have a corrupt doc and that was as far as
they suggested I go, given that uncorrupting a doc is not for amateurs. I
was satisfied with that as I can simply click "format biblio" and format at
end of day or when I am done with this gawdawful doc. Thought those of you
starting out might be interested. Bien Baez

Here is what Rick of Endnote said.

First make a backup of your document. Then, try to unformat
citations, then try to format the bibliography. See if this resolves the
problem or not. Of course, you could always disable the Instant Formatting
(go to "Tools > EndNote > Format Bibliography", click on the "Instant
Formatting" tab, and click "Disable"). This would prevent the instant
formatting function which converts the citations after inserting.

If you have any further questions, feel free to write back or give us a
call.

thanks for the tip, which might help if you are running WindowsXP, but
the original query by Mark was related to MacOSX and WordX.
Nothing on this on the FAQ site as far as I can see.

Have you ticked the box and then unformatted and reformatted? This is a
"feature" of some aspects of the recent version of Endnote, but I don't
know if it applies to this option.

Hello

Some weeks ago, I posted a question about sort order. Your comments helped
me so far as they showed me that I did not make any major mistake. I want
to sort the edited works of an author after the originals works. This
should be fairly simple, because in the 'edit styles - sort order'-window
there is a clickbox labeled: "Sort edited works of an author after
originals works of the same author". Unfortunately, activating this
clickbox has simply no effect on the sort order of the bibliography. Has
anybody ever worked with this option? Has anybody an idea, how I could
yield the result in any other way? (I tried almost everything in the
styles-sort order-window!) I´m working with EndNote 6.

Desperately hoping for help

Dear Mike,

Try formatting the doc to any journal style first. After you format the doc
you should be able to unformat. Weird, I know, but this works for me when I
get cross platform (mac/pc) documents formatted in different versions of
EndNote.

Dear EndNote users,

Adept Scientific, ISI ResearchSoft's partner in the United Kingdom
and
Germany, has (with ISI's permission) archived all postings to the
EndNote-Interest Mailing List since May 2000. These archives are at
http://lists.adeptscience.co.uk/endnote/

The EndNote-Interest Mailing List Archive forms a continuously-
growing
online resource of messages posted to the mailing list. You can view
the
archives indexed by Topic or by Date, or Search for the keywords
relating
to the information you are seeking. This provides an easy way for
people
to locate past postings and to track down information that has been
discussed in this forum.

We have, wherever possible, stripped out list subscriber e-mail
details
in
the archive so that list users won't be spammed by people who search
web
sites for e-mail addresses.

We hope you find this service useful, and welcome any feedback,

hi

I am trying to create a numbered master bibliography for a
document of several chapters. My problem is that I then want to
insert separate numbered bibliographies at the end of each
chapter, where the references refer to citations in the chapter, and
the bibliographical numbers are identical with the the relevant
references in the final master bibliography. I am using Endnote 4,
but could upgrade if necessary.

any help much appreciated.

Dear Nathan;

It is not an elegant solution, but I would suggest as an interim
solution you might periodically (days, weeks, whatever) simply convert
the EndNote bibliography into Word, then make a PDF file from it, which
would be searchable. It could be posted on the web in parallel with its
corresponding downloadable EndNote library, from which a user could
simplly copy or paste entries of interest. It requires a little manual
work by the user to select references, but I don't think it's
unreasonable. However, I am not completely familiar with your situation
and objectives.

as a matter of interest I've found a cumbersome way of rescuing the
files. They still play in Audion and on a PC. Using Audion mp3 editor I
cut the waveform and paste it into a new file. That then plays
perfectly in itunes.

my guess is somehow tag or similar info is getting corrupted and
causing Itunes to think the song is zero duration or some such. When i
create the new file itunes goes through whatever analysis is usually
does as recreates a valid tag/header. Obviously all based on minimal
knowledge of itunes / mp3 files.... but hey it works for me...

Patti, to further elucidate- from the EndNote help file (and I got it wrong
in my previous reply).

Forced Separation and forced dependence:
Often, punctuation needs to be linked to a field in a style. For example, if
a style requires that years be placed within parentheses, you would want to
remove the parentheses if you were to format a reference that didn't
actually include year information. EndNote uses an intelligent algorithm to
determine which punctuation to keep if a field is not present; for complex
cases, it uses two special characters to control which punctuation to remove
if a field contains no data:

The "forced separation" is the vertical bar or pipe symbol ("|"). It is used
to separate a field from adjacent punctuation so that the punctuation will
remain even if the field is not present in the formatted record.
The "link adjacent text" character is a non-breaking space. It appears in
the style editor as a small open circle. This character servers to link a
field to adjacent text, forcing the text to be removed if the field is
empty.

I am a beginner for endnote. Recently I feel headache with endnote.
When I insert selected citations from Word, it is OK. But after while
the citations in text will disappear automatically and all the
contents of citations will appear in the end of the word article. At
same time the output style will be marked with "show all". I changed
the output style and inserted the citations again. The problem
repeated again. Anyone can help me to solve the problem?

Brad

Hi I am a beginner to endnotes as well and I am experiencing the same
problem -so if
anyone can help me also I'd really appreciate it.
Also I find that endnotes does not set out my references in the way I want
it to. Is it
really a case of searching through the hundreds of styles!!! to find the one
which fits
with my requirements or is there a much easier way to customise the way I
want my
references to be set out.
Many thanks
Julie

From: "Michael Ciantar" /> Subject: Endnote to Excel to database

Slightly out of the general area
I sought to convert Endnote to Excel and I found the means but the
database just becomes a list with the first field of each record
starting with %0 . I have a means (gained from a search of excel tools
in Cnet) to make an excel spreadsheet a database. I need to convert
the list to a proper table automatically- any ideas. I can get the
details for the referred to tool and technique.

Hi, to all. To respond to V1 #1372 message. I have found that using CWW
takes some finessing but have been able to figure out most problems. The
advantage is that at the end one is sure that all of one's citations
(assuming one has been religious about not directly typing citations that
are not in Endnote bibliography). For me that has been a big help. I know
if I cut and past, inevitably I would miss something. As for formatting, I
found going to the preferences or amend output style to be fruitful in
getting the format that I want. Also, in editing the citation I found a way
to clear up some problems. Experiment! Good luck. Bien Baez.
