style formatting (xml)

Dear List Members

I have a little problem with formatting the created pseudo-xml. Here is
a snippet of the style:

<`reference` type="Reference Type"> <- defined in layout (prefix)
TAB<`author`>Author</`author`> <- defined in template
TAB<`year`>Year</`year`> <- defined in template
TAB<`title`>Title</`title`> <- defined in template
</`reference`> <- defined in layout (suffix)

If the fields Author and Year are empty, EndNote still places the TAB
into the final format. I know that with a non-breaking space one could
establish dependencies. But I cannot figure out how this should work
with the above; especially, I do not want any spaces between the
fields' values and the pseudo-xml tags.
Does anybody have a suggestion how to do this? Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Marc
